In times of uncertainty, books can provide a safe haven where our spirits can be lifted up and our imaginations can roam freely.  To get books into the hands of our community’s readers, the Cranbrook Public Library is launching a curbside pickup service for its members.

It only takes 3 steps:

  1. Place your order online at cranbrookpubliclibrary.ca or call 250 426 4063 ext. 1000.
  2. Library staff will fill your order and then call you to schedule a pickup time.
  3. Come to the library’s Kootenay Street Entrance entrance at your scheduled time to pick up your items.

Is it safe to borrow items at this time?

This service aligns with BC’s Restart Plan that give libraries the ability to begin offering direct service to people in a safe manner.  We are taking precautions to ensure that materials on our shelves and those that are returned to us are safe to be handled by members of the public.  Any returned items are not handled for the recommended period of 72 hours.  After that time they are cleaned, disinfected, checked in and made available for borrowing again.

Pickups are scheduled so that people do not have to line up.  Signage will be put up to guide you during the pickup process.  If someone else is picking up an order when you arrive, please wait at a distance of 2 metres.

Do not use this service if you feel unwell, or if any member of your household is sick or in isolation.

What can I borrow?

You can borrow any items currently in the library – books, films, audiobooks, magazines, etc.  Search the catalogue to see if the items you want are in: https://cranpl.ent.sirsidynix.net/client/en_US/default/.

What if I don’t know exactly what I want to order?

Call the library so you can give us a general idea of what you like to read.  Staff will then pick out a selection of titles that you will hopefully enjoy.

How do I place an order?

There are two ways:  online or by phone.  For each, you will need to know your library card number and PIN.

Online – The easiest way to place an order is to visit the library’s catalogue, find the items, and click the ‘Place Hold’ button beside each one you want.

Telephone – Call 250 426 4063 extension 1000 from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Saturday.

How often can I borrow items?

We ask that, at most, you place an order every week.  We don’t want you to make too many trips to the Library, and we want to ensure we can fill as many orders as possible as quickly as possible.  Select all the items you want in your next order at the same time.  If you order items today and then order more items tomorrow, staff will treat tomorrow’s items as a new order that will get filled in another week’s time.

What if I don’t know my PIN?

Call the library.  We will ask for your library card number and some other questions to confirm your identity and then reset your PIN to whatever 4-digit number you want.

Can I order items if I don’t have a library card?

You have to be a member to borrow material.  Give the library a call at 250 426 4063 to sign up over the phone.  Membership is free for all residents of Cranbrook and RDEK Area C.

How many items can I, or my family, borrow?

Because we don’t want you to make too many trips to the library, you can order up to 25 items per library card.

We encourage you to designate one person per household to pick up material for everyone.  For example, if 2 adults and 3 children all order material on their library cards, only 1 adult comes to the library to pick up the 5 bags of material.  Give us the name of who is picking up the material on behalf of everyone in the family when we call to schedule a pickup time.

Can I ask someone else to pickup my items?

You can have a family member, friend or neighbour pickup your material.  Important:  You must give us the name of the person picking up your material when we call you to schedule the pickup time.

How long will it take before I can pickup my order?

We will try to fill your order as quickly as possible, but it may take a few days depending on how many people use this service.  Also, it takes time for staff to gather and pack your items, particularly when we have to select items based on your preferences instead of a list of specific titles.  Please be patient!

 

How long can I borrow the items?

The items will be checked out for 9 weeks (63 days).  Depending on the situation at that time, we may extend the due date further.  No fines will accrue during this time.

I have fines/charges on my account.  Can I use this service?

You don’t have to pay any outstanding fines before using this service while the library remains closed.

You have to pay for any outstanding lost or damaged item fees before you can borrow items.  You can phone the library to pay by credit card.

How are pickups scheduled?

In order to have only one person picking up at a time, pickups are scheduled at 10 minute intervals.

Which door do I use?

Pickup will take place at the Kootenay Street entrance.  Be aware that people also use this entrance to return material.  Wait at least 2 metres back from the person ahead of you until they have left.

What happens when I pickup the material?
  1. If no one is in front of you when you arrive, come up to the table at the door and show staff your library card or a piece of identification so we know which bags of material belong to you. We are using new bags only.
  2. Step back to the Wait Here marker. Staff will open the door and place your bags of material on the table.
  3. Once the door has closed, step up to the table to retrieve your material.
  4. After you leave, staff will wipe down the table before serving the next person.
Can I return my items?

Yes, the book drop is open.  However, we have extended the due dates so that you can keep the items at home until at least to the end of June.  If you do want to return items, do it at the same time as you pickup your order.  In that case, return the items first through the book drop and then go to the table.  Do not place items you are returning on the table.  Safety protocols require that staff do not handle returned material for three days.

What happens if I forget and don’t pick up my items at the scheduled time?

Call the library as soon as possible to arrange a new pickup time.  If we do not hear from you, staff will give you a call between 4 and 5 pm that day.  If we cannot reach you, the items will be removed from your account and returned to the shelves so someone else can borrow them.
