Column: At the Library
From: Cranbrook Public Library
By Mike Selby
60 year ago, in the sleepy town of Springhill Nova Scotia, a young girlâ€"the only sister of 5 brothersâ€"takes up singing as a way to get noticed, and never stops. ALL OF ME is the revealing biography of ANNE MURRAY, easily one of Canada’s greatest recording artists of all time. While her rise to international fame is quite well known, less known are her tales of heavy drinking and marijuana use; the sexual advances of Brian Mulroney, Julio Iglesias, and Dusty Springfield; and how she peed all over Herb Albert. This is an entertaining and honest memoir from a true Canadian icon.
Arthur Slade’s THE HUNCHBACK ASSIGNMENTS should appeal to teen readers. As Dr. Hyde and his evil associates terrorize Victorian England., a 14-year-old sets out to stop them, using his wits and a variety of steam-powered inventions.

MIKE’S BOOKNOTES:
In September of 1978, Doubleday published Stephen King’s THE STAND; an epic story of how an H1N1-type flu wipes out 99.4 percent of the world’s population. However, King was quietly furious with Doubleday, because they had cut out over 400 pages of his original story. If the cuts were done for editorial reasonsâ€"to make the novel a better reading experienceâ€"King stated he would have been fine with it. But the pages were removed on behalf of Doubleday’s accounting department; worried that the market wouldn’t bear a “long Stephen King novel.” King never really forgave Doubleday, and immediately left them for NAL. It wasn’t until 1990 that THE STAND was finally published as King originally wrote itâ€"all 1152 pages of itâ€"by a much humbled Doubleday.
As the 70s drew to a close, King toyed with idea of writing a sequel to THE STAND, but he found himself writing a completely separate story. After about 60 pages of what he called THE CANNIBALS, he felt the story fizzled out, so he moved on to other projects. 30 years and 63 books later, King took a secondâ€"and this time successfulâ€"crack at his abandon story. While not a direct sequel to THE STAND, UNDER THE DOME is another massive epic at 1088 pages. Rest assured, Scribner has not cut a single word.
