Column: At the Library
From: Cranbrook Public Library

Spanish painter Francisco Goya painted an intense and haunting portrait of a dog on a wall of his house. Removed from his home and displayed 50 years after his death, “The Dog” is regarded as one of the most striking pictures in the world. Damian Tarnopolsky’s debut novel GOYA’S DOG is about a 1930s British painter whose work nobody can stand. As Toronto braces itself for entry into World War Two, the suffering artist is unable to comprehend why no one is interested in buying his paintings of triangles. GOYA’S DOG is a humorous and touching look at an artist at war with himself.

Teen readers should enjoy Barbara Haworth-Attard’s latest novel, HAUNTED. A young girl finds herself hypersensitive to the dead and dying in this post-war story. In an era which views women as only nurses, can she use her gift to rise above her station in life and become a doctor?

MIKE’S BOOKNOTES:

How it happened continues to baffle readers and scholars alike. That it happened is an undeniable fact. The American printing of Henry James’s THE AMBASSADORS"his 1903 dark comedy and final masterpiece"published chapters 28 and 29 in reverse order. Since no one said anything, this error was continued throughout the novel’s subsequent printings for the next 50 years. It wasn’t until 1955, when the firm of Harper & Brothers acquired the publishing rights to THE AMBASSADORS, that the mistake could finally be undone. As the lead book for their Modern Classic series, the publishers announced their new edition as definitive, “finally presenting the chapters in the right order.”

As you probably guessed, their new edition rolled off the presses with chapter 29 once again coming before chapter 28. With no choice but to send the book back to the press, THE AMBASSADORS was finally released in 1957, with chapters 28 and 29 in order at last. Yet the embarrassment stuck to Harper & Brothers, and they were forced to sell the paperback reprint rights to Doubleday.

Hoping to capitalize on their competitor’s mistake, Doubleday made much of the Harper & Brothers’s disaster, announcing how their 1958 edition would “have all chapters in their proper sequence.” And you know what? There not. Hubris can be a harsh mistress.
