MIKE’S BOOKNOTES:

As Janice Strong mentions in MOUNTAIN FOOTSTEPS, nothing quite matches the towering presence of Fisher Peak in our eastern skyline. Its imposing image adorns postcards, city brochures, calendars, and even library cards; it has seen the Stanley Cup twice; Pat Morrowâ€"the first Canadian to reach the summit of Mt. Everestâ€"used it to train for his Everest ascent. Yet the greatest story about Mt. Fisher isn’t about climbing it at all; it is about the man the mountain is named after.

In 1849, sixteen-year old Jack Fisher, of Philadelphia, headed for the rich goldfields of California, across the barren plains of the Midwest, enduring hardship every step of the way. Gold fever eventually drove him north to the banks of Wild Horse Creek in Kootenay country, where he finally claimed his fortune only to lose it as quickly as he found it.

Fisher’s unrelenting struggles are vividly brought to life in LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF FISHER PEAK, a new historical novel by Keith Powell. The irrepressible vitality of Jack Fisher and Powell’s impressive research, set against the historical backdrop of our own backyard, makes this book a highly entertaining read. I personally came away with a new understanding of a fascinating time of our history, as well as a clearer picture of the remarkable characters who came to call our area home.

Keith will be launching his book on Friday, October 16, at 7 pm in the manual training room at the Library. He will also be at Lotus Books on Saturday, October 17th, from 1 to 3 pm. Refreshments will be served at the Friday night launch, with Elena Yeung providing Bluegrass entertainment.
