Column: At the Library
From: Cranbrook Public Library
By Mike Selby

What he thought was simply the effects of a hangover, Michael J. Fox was actually in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease; a degenerative neurological disorder which caused Fox to semi-retire at the height of his career. ALWAYS LOOKING UP : THE ADVENTURES OF AN INCURABLE OPTIMIST is Fox’s own story of how he sees everything in a positive light. Even horrible events"such as Rush Limbaugh accusing him of faking the disease"are met with Fox’s unending enthusiasm for life.
GREAT BEAR LAKE is Erin Hunter’s latest entry in her highly addictive Seeker series. Three bear cubs from three different worlds are forced to work together in order to survive, and face a mysterious evil.

MIKE’S BOOKNOTES:

When we try to sort out our lives, and grasp for the real moments"the things we truly and deeply care about"we find that Shakespeare has give us a language in which to do so. The great paradox of Shakespeare’s achievement is"although he wrote over 400 years ago"it feels like he wrote his play or poem last night, directly for you.

Who are we? Who do we want to be? Who do we love? Who can we put our trust in? What can we believe in? The capacity we have to access these profound feelings of our own nature, remarkably come from Shakespeare’s language. He knew firsthand that the overwhelming grief at the death of a child devastates the parent into silence, when all they really want to do is scream

“Why should a dog, a horse, a rat, have life,
And thou no breath at all?”

Shakespeare helps us articulate our feelings, especially those that are otherwise inexpressible.
