The loan period and ability to renew is set by the lending library. You can find out more by reading the Requesting Interlibrary Loans brochure.
This service is normally free. However, interlibrary loans that are not picked up are subject to a $10 service charge, and from time to time the lending library may impose a charge for specialized material.
Returning Material
For your convenience, the outside return chutes at the Kootenay Street entrance are always open. When the library is open, you can return material inside.
Return CDs in their padded envelope to prevent damage and avoid being charged a $1 non-fundable fee.
It is your responsibility to know when the items you borrow are due. The library encourages you to keep the checkout receipt you get when you borrow material in a handy location, and to check your account online, to keep track of due dates so you can return material on time and avoid overdue charges. Remember, depending on the type of material you borrow, items may have different due dates even if you borrowed them at the same time.
Overdue Material
You will get charged $0.20 per item for each day you keep it beyond its due date. After 9 days you will get an overdue notice by phone or mail. Return material as soon as possible to avoid receiving further notices.
If you do not return an item you will be suspended, charged for the item, processing fees and any overdue fees. You may also be sent to a collection agency. You will get reinstated at the library's discretion upon full payment of all fees.
Anyone with $10 or more in overdue fees will have their borrowing privileges suspended until the fees are paid. You will be charged replacement costs, processing fees, and any overdue fees on lost or damaged items. There will be a charge for NSF cheques.
Lost or Damaged Material
If you lose or damage an item, you will get charged the cost of the item, a processing fee, and any overdue fees. You must pay the fees in full to avoid losing your library privileges.
If you return a lost item before paying for it, you must still pay the processing fee and any overdue fees incurred. If you pay for a lost item, but find and return it within 6 months of its' being lost, the library will reimburse the cost of the item only. The library will not reimburse the cost of the item if it is returned more than 6 months after it is lost.
After you pay in full for a damaged item, you have the option of keeping it.
Hold Requests
You can place a hold request for any circulating item in the library, except Rapid Reads. You can have up to 25 hold requests on your account at any one time. The library will notify you by phone or mail when the item is available for you to pick up. You can also check the status of your hold request online. You have 4 days to pick up an item once it becomes available for you.
Placing a Hold Request
You can ask staff to place a hold request for you or you can do it at your convenience using the online catalogue by taking the following steps.
- Go to the Library's website and click on Catalogue.
- Find the item you want.
- Click on the 'Request Item' button.
- Enter your library card barcode number and PIN, and click on the 'Login' button.
- Click the 'Request' button.
It is your responsibility to track your holds. The best way to do this is to 'Check Your Account' and click on Holds to see the status of your hold requests.
Suspend a Hold Request
Suspending a hold request keeps your place in line, but stops the item from being made available to you until you are ready. This is useful if you are going on vacation, or are just too busy to get to the library.
- Go to the Cranbrook Public Library's website.
- Click on 'Check Your Account'.
- Enter your library card barcode number and your PIN and click on 'Login'.
- Click on "Holds" at top of the screen. This will show holds ready for pick-up and holds not ready for pick-up.
- Click the checkbox beside the item you wish to make inactive.
- Choose the date you want to reactivate your hold request on from the drop-down menu and then click on the 'Change Status' button. The status of the hold will change to 'Suspended'.
- If you are ready to receive items before that date simply click the checkbox beside the item you wish to reactivate and click on 'Change Status'.
Cancel a Hold Request
If you wish to cancel the hold you placed, carry out steps 1-4 above, click the checkbox beside the item you want to cancel, and then click on the 'Cancel Request' button. This only works for items which are not yet available for you.
