How to Join
Membership
Membership is free if you are a resident of Cranbrook or RDEK Area C.
You get limited borrowing privileges free of charge if you present a valid BC public library card or BC OneCard during registration.
If you are from out of province or are a BC OneCard borrower who wants full library privileges, you can get a non-resident membership for a fee.

You can get your own Cranbrook Public Library card by coming down to the library and presenting one piece of preferred identification, or two pieces of other identification, as listed below. You must show the original identification.
If you want to place a hold request right now, but do not have a membership, you can register online by going to My Account in the online catalogue and clicking on the 'New User' button. Fill in all the information asked for and start using your virtual card right away. Then come to the Cranbrook Public Library within 30 days with the necessary identification to complete your registration and get a permanent card.
Preferred Personal Identification (name, signature and current address)
- BC Driver's License
- BCID (issued by ICBC Driver Licensing Centres for non-drivers)
If this identification does not have the current address, then one proof of residential address document from the list below must be shown.
If the preferred identification is not available, the applicant must provide one piece of identification from each of the following lists, one of which must show the applicant's signature and one of which must show the current residential address.

- Status Indian card
- Canadian Citizenship card
- Permanent Resident card
- Cheque cashing agency card
- Student card from the College of the Rockies
If the applicant does not have any of the above forms of personal identification they may volunteer their Social Insurance Number card.
Proof of Residential Address
- Automobile registration
- Rental agreement (officially signed)
- Bank statement* or personalized cheque
- Utility bill*
- Personal mail with current postmark*
- Hotel receipt(s) (must be stamped by hotel and show a stay of at least one month)
* Mailed items must be dated and no more than one month old.
Applicants who have proof of residential address but no Canadian issued identification may get a library card by showing a Canadian visa that has been issued for 6 months or more.
Lost or Stolen Cards
Report a lost or stolen library card immediately by calling 250 426 4063. You are responsible for any items borrowed with your library card until you report it missing. The fee to replace a lost or stolen card is $2.00. Please bring identification with you when you come to replace it.
Membership Agreement Terms and Conditions
- The member named on a card is the only person that may use that card. Loss or theft of the card must be reported immediately to the Cranbrook Public Library. The member is responsible for all materials borrowed and all charges attributable to the card before the loss or theft of the card is reported.
- Materials borrowed by the member will be returned to the library on their respective due dates. Otherwise, the member will pay charges comprised of all fines, costs for replacement of lost or damaged materials, and processing fees and any long overdue administration fees attributable to the card regardless of how the materials were borrowed or the charges were incurred. 'Processing fees' include all costs associated with the processing an item receives to make it ready for public lending. 'Long overdue administration fees' include all costs, expenses, notice fees, administrative fees incurred by the Library in recovering or attempting to recover the charges due to the Library from the member.
- The Library may at any time cancel the card, and withdraw all rights and privileges in respect of the card. On cancellation of the card, the member will immediately return to the Library the card and all materials borrowed and pay all outstanding charges attributable to the card.
- The Library may suspend the member's rights and privileges any time the member owes the Library more than the amount set from time to time by the Library Board. Reinstatement of those rights and privileges will be at the Library's sole discretion.
- The card is only valid up to the membership expiration date. The member may request the Library to renew the card on or after the expiration date upon payment of all outstanding charges attributable to the Card and proof of current street address.
- The Library is not responsible for damage caused by DVDs, CDs, videocassettes or other audio-visual materials borrowed from its collections. Customers use all audio-visual materials at their own risk and should use caution when playing such materials on their equipment.
- The member agrees to abide by the policies of the Cranbrook Public Library. Failure to do so may result in loss of library privileges.
- The Library has the right to change the terms of this agreement, and its policies, without notice.
